Davinci feat. Kaz Kyzah & R.O.D.

As DaVinci continues to prepare for the March 9th release of his official debut album, The Day The Turf Stood Still, the rising Fillmore talent is dropping another pre-album song, "Real N*ggaz." Featuring a guest verse Kaz Kyzah, formerly one half of the duo The Team along with Clyde Carson, as well as production from up-and-coming Gary, Indiana beatsmith Kris Styles and singer ROD. The message of the song, drawing from the track's title, finds DaVinci and his fellow artists speaking on character issues. But rather than petty finger-pointing, in DaVinci's own style, he spends his verses in lyrical confrontation against, as he calls it, "The saturation of superficial, dishonest, and redundant content in the streets, media, and politics." DaVinci's lyrics contrast the beat's soul sample, as the song combines sped up vocal samples and DaVinci's raspy baritone as he raps, "Since Jigga ain't my bigger brother, and 9th Wonder ain't my Little Brother/ I don't sit and wonder how I'm fin to get on/ I just shit on, the phlegm on, any track I spit on." Indeed, and with forthcoming videos and singles from The Day The Turf Stood Still on the way, if DaVinci's warning doesn't quite resonate yet... it will.
DaVinci's The Day The Turf Stood Still will be available for free download March 9th via SWTBRDS Creative Collective.

Rainy Day Beat Chop

So the homie Ammbush lightweight called me out the other day on my visit to the SWTBRDS broadcast about my lack of posts on the FFF blog. He's right, I don't post enough over here. So I'm gonna try and change that in the coming weeks, and I'm gonna start with a little beat chop I did recently at the crib. I gave this a try at the SWTBRDS broadcast but I have a feeling it didn't exactly come out the way I planned it, so I wanted to set it straight. This is what it was supposed to sound like! Big ups to the homie Ammbush, Al Jieh, DaVINCI, and 24KMilkcrate.com.

So Cal?

I talk shit about Southern Cali because I lived there for 6 years and have a right to, but I also have a deep appreciation for its rich musical history. Now this joint might not be rich, but I learned to love modern soul music and dance my off to songs like this during my junior high days. I had this 12 inch a while back but lost it and am looking for another copy because the remix is dope too.

Holler if you got a copy and wanna trade.

This was on the 'South Central' soundtrack by the way, a very slept on movie that you should check out if you haven't already. As far as I know these guys never went anywhere - if anyone knows where the members strayed off to I would be very interested to know.

A Day in the Life of Neil Armstrong

Canadian retailer Ransom dropped this video this past weekend profiling New York native DJ Neil Armstrong. This serves as a peek into a day in his life, one where he has found himself the backing/tour DJ for Jay-Z, one of the biggest names in music. To call Neil a "Turntablist" or a "Mixtape DJ" would not reveal any substantial part of the story. Neil came up alongside the greats of the 90's New York DJ scene. These are folks that are often overlooked when people talk DJ culture; Guys like Rob Swift, J-Smoke, DJ Excess, Fat Fingaz, JS-1, DJ Supreme along with his own crew: The 5th Platoon.

The Friday Five: Oh, Canada!

I've definitely made my share of Canada jokes over the years. Actually, I've made my share, your share, and her share of Canada jokes. You know, like how Canada is the US's largest national park. How it's America's hat. How they only recently got the Internet in their igloos. That sort of thing. But last week, I was up in the frozen tundra to do some DJing with m'man DJ Frame, and I gotta tell ya, Canada is freakin' great. That's not to say I won't still crack jokes on Canada, but just understand that they come from a place of love. So with that in mind, here are five ways Canada totally sons the States:

1. The people
Canadians are nice. Simple as that. They're really cool people (no, that's not a "Canada is cold" joke), always looking to help you out or hook you up or what have you. But they aren't nice in a smarmy, cloying way. It's just something that comes naturally to them. It's a wonderful thing that should be celebrated, even by cynics like me.

2. The crowds
The best way I can say it is that Canadians really appreciate music. They come to the club looking to dance, and they show a lot of love to DJs who can make that happen. Sure, they want to hear some hits, some familiar stuff, but they're so much more willing to let DJs take chances and go off the beaten path than American crowds are these days with their "I want to hear the exact same songs I listened to in my car on the way to the club" attitude. Americans: Learn from our northerly neighbors. It'll be so much more fun for everybody.

3. The DJ pay
If I did these exact same parties in the States, I would've made maybe--maybe--half as much money. Real talk.

4. The women
Canadian women are hot. Not much else to say about that.

5. The health care system
I didn't experience this firsthand (knock on wood), but c'mon. Our system is a freakin' mess. Theirs isn't perfect (how could any system be perfect?), but it's a hell of a lot better than ours. It makes sense, and it works; perhaps that's a by-product of the fact that Canada isn't as beholden to screaming right-wing crazies as the States are.

New Clash of the Titans Trailer

This might be corny. I had to post this because I'm a fan of the original jump off. It seems like the whole hype on the original was due to the fact that movie goers weren't used to seeing certain special effects, flying pegasus', medusa etc etc. We'll see what it do.
